1. What are the most common problems with planers?

Common planer issues include snipe at the beginning or end of boards, tearout in figured grain, dull cutter knives or inserts, and inconsistent thickness. These problems are often resolved through proper setup, sharp cutters, correct feed rates, and adequate infeed/outfeed support.

2. Is a planer useless without a jointer?

A planer is still useful without a jointer, but the workflow changes. Without a jointer, a planer can only “thickness stock” if the board is already flat on one face. Many shops use planer sleds or shims to flatten boards when a jointer isn’t available, especially in smaller workspaces.

3. Is planing better than sanding?

Planing and sanding serve different purposes. Planing removes material quickly and creates a consistent thickness, making it ideal for dimensioning lumber. Sanding refines the surface and removes minor tool marks. In most workflows, planing comes first, followed by sanding for final finish quality.

4. Can you run a 2x4 through a planer?

Yes, you can run a 2x4 through a planer as long as one face is reasonably flat. A planer is designed to make the top surface parallel to the bottom, not to flatten warped lumber. For best results, joint one face first or use a planer sled to stabilize twisted or bowed boards before planing.

5. What size planer do I need for my workshop?

The right planer size depends on the width, thickness, and volume of material you process.
