Sustainability for a Circular Future

What is Sustainability?

Sustainability is the balance between the environment, economy, and equity. It involves avoiding the depletion of natural resources to maintain an ecological balance. Sustainable development meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

The Linear Economy and its Unsustainability

The traditional linear model of extraction, production, distribution, use, and disposal is wasteful and unsustainable. This approach depletes finite resources and contributes to environmental degradation.

The Würth Group's Approach: The Circular Way

Ambition to Transition to a Circular Economy

The Würth Group aims to create infinite opportunities from finite resources and grow as a leader in the modern, circular economy.

Three Transformation Fields

  • Achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions
  • Decoupling growth from primary resources
  • Ensuring social inclusivity, leaving no one behind

Transforming the Business

Würth Machinery and the Würth Group are transforming their business by measuring, evaluating, and steering using data, while enabling human transformation.

Achieving Net Zero Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Seven Steps for Climate Neutrality

Scope 1 and 2 Emissions

To achieve climate neutrality, we plan to focus on avoiding and reducing emissions, generating power in-house, sourcing green energy, transitioning to electromobility, avoiding fossil fuel heating, and offsetting unavoidable emissions with biodiversity projects.

Scope 3 Emissions

Additionally, achieving climate neutrality in the supply chain is essential for a comprehensive approach to sustainability.

Decoupling Growth from Primary Resources

Closing Material Life Cycles

  1. Circular product design
  2. Ensuring material health
  3. Carbon-neutral production and supply chain
  1. Ensuring recyclability
  2. Establishing reverse logistics
  3. Complying with social standards in production and supply chain

Würth Machinery and the Würth Group are considering lifetime value and product lifetime cost, aiming to save money, raw materials, and become highly resilient.

Ensuring Social Inclusivity

Five Steps for a Socially Responsible Supply Chain

  1. Using global standards as a guide
  2. Committing to sustainability-related standards
  3. Identifying and assessing risks
  4. Screening and developing suppliers
  5. Ensuring transparency through sustainability reporting

By 2025, the Würth Group aims to integrate all 479 companies into its sustainability reporting, identifying synergies, deriving measures, and anchoring sustainability in the supply chain.

Sustainability Within Würth Machinery

Commitment to Sustainability

At Wurth Machinery, we are committed to promoting sustainability and environmental responsibility throughout our operations. We recognize the importance of creating a inclusive and equitable work environment, and our human resource standards reflect this commitment. Additionally, we have implemented several initiatives to reduce our energy consumption and carbon footprint.

Sustainability Efforts

These include replacing outdated fluorescent lighting with energy-efficient LED systems across our facilities, installing motion and time sensors to ensure lighting is only used when necessary, and upgrading to high-efficiency heating and air conditioning units. Through these efforts, we aim to minimize our environmental impact while fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace that values equity and sustainable practices.

Goals and Next Steps

Goal #1: Information and Data Transparency

By 2025, we will integrate all 479 companies into the Würth Group's sustainability reporting. This is the key to identifying synergies and deriving measures. Integrated reporting on social standards will furthermore firmly anchor sustainability in the supply chain.

Würth Machinery and the Würth Group are engaging stakeholders and inviting participation in the Circular Way.
